Imagine you spotted your local MPs in a restaurant, gave them a load of criticism, and were then later tracked down in another restaurant and viciously assaulted by the whole party while you tried to dine with your girlfriend.

This is what appears to have happened in the UAE this week, where a group of Georgian MPs representing populist party Georgian Dream AKA the Kotsebi were in Abu Dhabi to attend a Coldplay concert. In the restaurant of the hotel where they were staying, they were noticed by a Georgian citizen with permanent residence in the UAE. He gave them a dressing down, asking on camera: “What do you have to say about what happened yesterday in Batumi? What do you say about the violence against protesters in Tbilisi?’

The next day, the same group of Georgian MPs noticed the citizen at another restaurant, and straight up attacked the guy in the middle of his meal:

Wow, can you actually get away with doing that in Abu Dhabi? I guess we’ll have to wait and find out. Fair play to the citizen for fighting back and managing to hold his own in what was essentially a gang attack. I’m not going to act like I know anything about the politics of that region, but it’s not a great look for the Georgian Dream party on any level really, is it?

In any case, best the civilian stays put in Abu Dhabi and never returns to his home country, IMO.
