Houston rap legend Paul Wall has revealed that he wasn’t aware that he was white until his classmates in elementary school pointed it out to him.

The ‘Sittin’ Sidewayz’ hitmaker, 43, told The Breakfast Club:

“I didn’t know I was white ’til white people told me I was white. They was like, ‘You white. Why you talk and act like that? You white. And I’m like, what do you mean?’”

When the hosts asked him when exactly he came to the realisation that he was white, Wall answered:

“Definitely in elementary school or middle school. I mean, all my friends were Black or Mexican or Asian. I lived in a very diverse neighborhood, there were white people there, but it was Mexican, Black, Vietnamese, Indian… A lot of everything. So, we got a great mixture of growing up in America, I guess.”

In fairness to Paul Wall, his mum did take a DNA test recently and found she was three percent African:

“I know she can’t say the N-word. That ain’t enough for her to say the N-word.”

Incredible. I wonder if Paul Wall fell to his knees and let out a cry of anguish when he realised he wasn’t black? Had to be a pretty bitter pill to swallow. Not that it stopped him immersing himself in the culture and becoming one of the biggest names the Texas rap scene has ever produced.

I’m not sure what he’s up to musically these days, but who could forget this absolute banger from the early 00s:

Or this one:

What I can’t wrap my head around is what Paul Wall saw when he looked in the mirror as a youngster? Pretty hilarious that he thought he saw a black lad looking back at him, given his skin tone and all (and, presumably, the skin tone of the rest of his family). Oh well, you’ll always be a Black King to us, Paul Wall.
