You would think that black people have an N-word pass and can freely throw the word around when abusing footballers on social media and whatnot, but apparently this is not the case, as a 21-year-old woman from London has just found out this week.
Jamila Abdi, 21, was having a discussion about a football match on X on 27 August 2023 and used the N-word to refer to Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. Ms Abdi wrote:
“I’m so p***** off let me get my hands on that f**** n***a.”
Which is pretty surprising because I can’t remember Alexander Isak being particularly disappointing for Newcastle last season (he’s actually one of their best players?), but then maybe she was supporting the opposing team and was upset that Isak had balled all over them? F*ck knows. That’s neither here nor there though, because the point is that this young black lady’s Tweet calling a young black footballer the N-word was deemed racially abusive, and now Jamila Abdi is being charged over the Tweet.
The Metropolitan Police called her in for questioning in December 2023 and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has now told The Independent that’s been charged under the Communications Act of 2003.
Although no one was tagged in the post, the Metropolitan Police alleged that the post “conveyed a message which was indecent or grossly offensive for the purpose of causing distress of anxiety to the recipient or to any other person to whom (…) intended (…)”.
A Crown Prosecution Service spokesperson said:
“Hate crime has a profound impact on victims and communities.
“Being from an ethnic minority background does not provide a defence to racially abusing someone.
“Our commitment to tackling these abhorrent crimes through fair and impartial prosecution is unwavering.”
Maybe the white people prosecuting Ms. Abdi over this have decided that if they’re not allowed to say the N-word, then she shouldn’t be able to either? It would be interesting to know what Alexander Isak himself makes of it too; I doubt he cares or that he would have even been aware if this girl hadn’t have been charged over it.
Oh well, I suppose if you’re a POC looking to abuse your fellow POC on social media, you should think twice in 2024. You have been warned.
Abdi is due to appear in court on 8 August.
