It’s been nearly 48 hours since the wife of TV doctor and columnist Michael Mosley reported him missing on the Greek island of Symi, and police say there’s “just no trace” of the 67-year-old after he left a beach to go hiking along a costal path at around 1:30pm.
Dr. Michael Mosley seems like a fit and healthy guy, so hopefully that counts for something. However, he’s also 67 years old and it was 35C in Symi on Wednesday when he decided to go hiking during the hottest part of the day in the middle of a heatwave. He also left his phone behind with his wife, so that doesn’t help matters.
Today, Greek police have resumed their search for the One Show and This Morning regular, with a friend of the person Mosley was staying with on the island struggling to understand how anyone could get lost on that part of the island.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live’s Drive, she said: “It’s a road that sort of heads over the mountain side but it’s been recently widened and there is only one route, so it’s not possible to lose your way.
“So, it is probably a 20-minute walk down the side of the mountain, but it’s not overly rugged or something that would be seen to be too dangerous, it’s something that tourists do every day in the summer. I’m having trouble understanding how you could get lost.”
A woman who gave her name as Irini, who works at Kamares coffee shop on Pedi Beach, added: “They came, the police, with the coast police and firemen, and the rescue team, to carry out the investigation, but I don’t think that anything has been found yet.”
Another woman in the area said Mosley’s disappearance was “strange” as the path he was thought to be on is “clear”.
She said: “It’s a quiet place … if you see the map of the area it’s a clear path, it’s nothing dangerous, many people go every day, every few minutes, that’s the reason it’s very strange because it’s a clear path.”
Baffling. Ironically, Michael Mosley had been pushing walks as a way to maintain a healthy weight recently. We can only hope the search & rescue teams find him quickly, although as it’s been nearly 2 days already, it’s hard to be optimistic. It could be that his age coupled with the intense heat may have led to him experiencing a heatstroke, and he’s tumbled into a crevice somewhere that they haven’t checked yet.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed because Michael Mosley seems likely a genuinely great guy whose advice sh*ts on all the TikTok health influencers out there. Let’s hope he’s found safe and sound by the end of today.
