Baby Reindeer has been dominating TV discourse in the last few weeks but it looks like its #1 spot in the Netflix rankings has finally been usurped by a show that’s just as disturbing.
That show is Netflix’s latest hit documentary – Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal. The show is based on the 2015 cyber attack on dating website Ashley Madison, which allowed married men to cheat on their wives with women who I guess had no moral qualms about it. Its catchphrase pretty much summed it up: ‘Life is short. Have an affair.’
I haven’t seen the documentary yet but I remember reading up on Ashley Madison and how it royally screwed its user base. In fact, their entire business model was built on lies. They lied about how many women were on the website, lied about the security measures they took to protect anonymity, and even had Ashley Madison employees pose as users in order to keep customer credit cards on file. Absolute scumbags!
In the end, the Ashley Madison cyber attack meant three million married users were exposed, which the rest left paranoid that their details would soon be out in public too. This resulted in marriages falling apart, people being fired from their jobs, and at least two suicides.
At its peak, Ashley Madison had 37 MILLION users worldwide, which is pretty impressive for an adultery app where you have to sign up with all your most private information. Since the show has been such a success for Netflix, Ashley Madison now claim they have seen a user spike of 365,000 “users per month”, whatever that means. I wouldn’t believe anything they say though, given their track record.
P.S. Just seen that Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal has already been bumped down to #2 on the Netflix rankings by the third season of Bridgerton. I guess it’s a good time to have a Netflix account.
