A while back there were non-stop stories coming out about Ellen Degeneres being a total d1ck to her staff, which resulted in her losing tons of viewers and advertisers until he show was inevitably cancelled completely.
Well, a couple years on, Ellen is now back doing stand-up and making light of the whole situation. Which she may as well have done from the start seeing as all her apologising didn’t do her any favours.
At a live show in LA this week, Ellen remarked:
“What else can I tell you? Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business. There’s no mean people in show business.”
Of course, she still sees herself as the victim:
“The hate went on for a long time and I would try to avoid looking at the news. The ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind. That was the headline. I became this one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps … Would a mean person dance up steps? Had I ended my show by saying, ‘Go f*** yourself,’ people would’ve been pleasantly surprised.”
Poor Ellen. Just hanging out at her $50 million mansion, counting her millions, and trying to avoid watching the news where everyone is calling her the biggest bully in Hollywood. Could be worse, if you think about it.
In the end, she should have just embraced her new role as the villain instead of cowering and hiding and apologising as more and more stories came out. She basically acknowledged it herself on stage – she’s mean, old and gay:
Ellen also made this crack at one point, saying this was actually the second time she’d been kicked out of showbiz — referring to the backlash she got in the ’90s when she came out — and added there’d be a third time eventually because “I’m mean, old, and gay.”
She went on to say that she’s really sad about how her show got cancelled, which probably isn’t as sad as how she made all her staff members feel when she was openly degrading and bullying them, sacking them for going to funerals, and making them ‘cry like little babies‘.
Still, it looks like there’s something of an Ellen Degeneres comeback on the horizon. Her new stand-up is being filmed for a Netflix special that will reportedly air later this year. Is Ellen going to go “anti-woke” on everyone? Could there be redemption on the cards? Better bring the jokes, that’s all I can say.
