A man has been arrested for allegedly pushing his girlfriend to her death off an 100ft cliff after she turned down his marriage proposal.

Nizamettin Gursu took girlfriend Yesim Demir, 39, to a romantic clifftop in Polente Cape, Turkey, to pop the question, but apparently lost the plot after he didn’t get the response he was looking for.

When police arrived on the scene, Gursu told them that Demir had said ‘yes’ and they had been drinking to celebrate their engagement. He said he then he went to the car to grab something, heard a scream and discovered Ms Demir was gone.

Just a couple problems with that version of events: police discovered signs of a ‘violent struggle’ at the clifftop including broken glasses and a broken speaker, but most notably, the ring he claimed Demir accepted was not on her finger and rather in his pocket. Whoops…

Not only that, but Demir’s family told investigators that she had been planning to break up with him for a while, and would not have accepted his proposal. They also said she suffered from panic attacks and would never have intentionally got close to a cliff edge.

At the time of his girlfriend’s death, Gursu played the heartbroken boyfriend, and said they chose to have a ‘romantic memory’ after the proposal.

He said: ‘We drank some alcohol. Everything happened at once. She lost her balance and fell down.’

Based on all the contradictions and information from the family, police arrested Gursu and he is now being held in custody pending trial.
