Major content warning for this one as it involves footage of ice hockey player Adam Johnson’s final moments before he was killed in a freak incident with an opponent during a game on Saturday.
The attacker Matt Petgrave (player in red) kicks victim Adam Johnson (player in white) with his skate directly in the throat, which resulted in catastrophic, fatal injury for the 29-year-old Nottingham Panthers star. We can’t share the footage on this blog, so if you want to watch it, click HERE.
Now I don’t know anything about ice hockey and I know we’ve referred to this as a ‘freak accident’ a couple of times in the blog already, but I’m also seeing an argument being made online that the kick was intentional, and that Sheffield Steelers player Matt Petgrave should be facing manslaughter charges at the very least. Watching it back, I can certainly see the perspective that it was an intentional side kick to the throat, which is an insane thing to do when wearing ice skates. Johnson initially gets to his feet and is helped toward the side of the rink by a teammate, but then collapsed, with his death being confirmed hours later from hospital.
At this point, Petgrave has not been arrested and has yet to face any consequences. Obviously he would never have dreamed that his actions on the ice rink would result in a situation like this, but I’d be very surprised if further action isn’t taken against him now. Either way, just a tragically sad situation and our thoughts are with Johnson’s friends and family.
