Step aside, XL Bully. There’s a new dangerous dog breed in town – the adorably small, hilarious-looking Dachshund AKA Sausage Dog.

This comes as a man was left needing urgent medical treatment when his wife’s seven-year-old sausage dog attacked him out of nowhere in Victoria, Australia. He ended up needing five stitches after having his face ripped open by this (presumably) otherwise very good boy:

Now, the dog’s owner has put out a plea on Facebook to find him a new home, worried he might attack her four-year-old or nine-month-old kids next. In a surprise twist however, her husband says he wants to keep him.

Explaining the situation on Facebook group Mums of Boys Australia, the woman wrote:

“First, it was me approaching him on the bed with my husband (who seems to be the dog’s ‘chosen one’). Second, it was my husband’s face after being picked up running out of the laundry and being carried back in. He started growling at my hubby and my hubby put his hand on his mouth.

I want him gone, rehomed (we have him on Dachshund Rescue Australia on private sale) but I am being strangely shut down by my husband, who has a very strong bond with him. I am worried everyday for the safety of my children, I am being told I am overreacting.”

The owner said the dog had never shown any signs of aggression before, and has spoken to an animal behaviour expert to find answers. Looking into it on Google, it turns out that sausage dogs are actually typically aggressive dogs, because they’ve been bred to hunt rats and badgers. People are just surprised to hear this because sausage dogs look completely ridiculous, and problems aren’t usually reported due to their small size.

As with most dogs, it comes down to how you raise and socialise them and ensuring they mix with other dogs and people from very early on. Apparently this dog was drama-free until the moment it attacked this man though, so it also goes to show that there’s always some degree of unpredictability with certain dog breeds.
