Brandon Cronenberg, the son of legendary weirdo director David Cronenberg, burst onto the scene with ‘Possessor’ a couple of years ago – which I’m sure most of us ended up being freaked out by during the pandemic – and now his follow up ‘Infinity Pool’ has been described as the most messed up film of 2023.

From what I can tell by the trailer, the movie revolves around rich couple Alexander Skarsgard and Mia Goth going on holiday to some weird island and then having to purchase and send in a creepy doppelgänger of Skasgard to be executed for a crime he’s committed, before things somehow descend into more depravity. The trailer itself is an actual fever dream and some of the snippets from various reviews make it sound like a truly warped experience.
Take a look at it below:
The Playlist – “Infinity Pool is the kind of film that reminds you that sometimes, the best thing a filmmaker can do is take you to places you would never dream of heading without apologising for any of it.”
Slash Film – “Cronenberg creates an atmosphere of nauseating dread through it all as things grow increasingly deranged. No fooling: this is not an easy movie to watch. It gets under your skin and makes your flesh crawl. It infects you. You’ll probably want to take a shower after the credits roll, and then take another shower just to be sure you’re extra clean.”
Consequence – “There’s just more under the hood than your typical imitators: the antic disposition of the idle rich, the way infinite money can absolve the rich of any accountability, and the ever-predatory nature of colonial tourism. Wrap it up in a package this wild, shocking, and perverse, and it makes for a delightful bloody mess that you’ll want to go back to.”
Yeah that does look like it’s going to be a very uncomfortable watch doesn’t it? You’re gonna have to wait a couple of months though because it’s not going to be released in the UK until March 24th. Just misses the Oscars hey?
