I’ve never really thought of baked beans – or any kind of beans really – as something that I’ve ever looked forward to eating as they’ve just sort of always been there on the plate, making up one of the five a day that I never manage to eat all of anyway. They’re fine, they’re basically a bit whatever really.

One man who doesn’t share my opinion of beans though is former White House chef Paul Newnham, who is vowing to make beans sexy in order to tackle climate change and the current cost of living crisis. In an attempt to get this initiative rolling, Newnham has formed the ‘Beans Is How’ movement and is encouraging chefs to add them to their menu with a sexy avant garde twist to try and get more people eating them.

Here’s what he had to say about the idea:

I love beans – I cook beans, I grow beans, I eat beans. I’ve never met a bean I didn’t like.

They are little nuggets of greatness and they have the potential to improve the lives of people around the world.

If we collectively focus on this one product that we know is good for us, we can really make a difference.

To do that, we’re going to need everybody’s help – we’re going to need chefs to put more beans on their menus and make beans sexy.

It’s an admirable idea I guess, but I’m just not really sure if it’s that practical. I know that Newnham says that he’s never met a bean that he didn’t like – really weird turn of phrase – but I just don’t think that it’s going to be possible to make everyone excited about one of the most average vegetables out there.

Interested to see how he proposes to do this though. Maybe give them a sexy French name like ‘pomme de terre’? That’s what they call potatoes. Could be a real game changer.

For more of the same, check out this baked bean paddling pool disaster. That certainly didn’t make anything sexy whatsoever.
