I think every single time there’s an international tournament, questions are asked as to why Baddiel, Skinner and The Lightning Seeds haven’t released a new version of Three Lions after the success of the 1998 version, but it seems like this is the year that they’ve finally caved in and done it.

It’s definitely not for the reason that you’re expecting though. Turns out Baddiel and Skinner firmly believe that football came home when the Lionesses won Euro 2022 this summer, so they’re releasing this version to give the guys one last shot at it and honour the England women’s achievement.
They’ve also used the fact that the World Cup is happening in November to turn the anthem into a Christmas song about it. Here’s the new version as well as both of their thoughts on it:
We could not resist the fact that the World Cup was at Christmas, and people have said in the past that football songs are a little bit tacky, and obviously Christmas songs are a bit tacky.
In maths two negatives make a positive, so we think there’s so much tacky in this that it’s going to be a classic.
The Lionesses brought it home, football came home and some would say that’s the end of the song, stop singing it.
But we decided to give it one more go on the basis that the blokes have not brought it home.
The fact is, the best I’ve ever seen an England team play was this summer and it was the Lionesses.
It wasn’t like ‘oh yes we’ve got to support the women’s game,’ no this was brilliant football.
Lol was that actually Noddy Holder from Slade at the end? Great cameo.
Anyway, when I was writing about the song before I had listened to it I thought I was going to absolutely hate it because of the Christmas element and the fact that it was going to reek of wokeism, essentially destroying an absolute classic, but whilst it did sort of do that, I was still kind into it. The little voiceovers/asides were stupid and annoying, I think it still retained some of the charm and optimism that made it such a banger in the fist place though. B+.
I really can’t see the hordes of England fans singing that over the World Cup period or at the games though, can you? It’s coming home for Christmas just doesn’t have the same ring to it does it?
For more of the same, check out these fake England fans in Qatar singing ‘Three Lions’ really badly. This World Cup is going to be so weird.
