A former administator at Yale medical school has been sentenced to 9 years in prison for a $40M fraud which saw her order computers for the department and sell them – then use the cash to live a baller lifestyle.
43-year-old Jamie Petrone’s official job title was actually ‘Director of Finance and Administration for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine’, which sounds just vague and confusing enough for her colleagues to miss the fact she funneled $40M out of the department over 10 years, using university funds to buy PCs and PC hardware and sell them to a company that paid her, then resold them.
Then again, maybe she was just really good at it and that’s why she didn’t get caught. According to the article in MailOnline, she kept all her single transactions under $10,000 which is the limit where she would have had to get permission from higher ups. Even still, it’s quite amazing no one at Yale clocked that millions were going missing every year for a decade. I thought they were supposed to be really brainy over there?
One look at Jamie Petrone’s Instagram might’ve been a bit of a clue – she owns six cars! A 2014 white Mercedes-Benz G550, a 2017 Land Rover she nicknamed ‘Baby Girl’, a 2015 black Cadillac Escalade Premium, a 2020 red Mercedes Benz, a 2016 white Cadillac Escalade and a 2018 Dodge Charger…
If that wasn’t enough of a giveaway, how about the fact she bought 4 homes… one in Georgia, and three in Connecticut!
Maybe if she had bought a 5th home, alarm bells would have started ringing. It’s not like going on multiple holidays a year with your husband and being garmed out in designer gear is enough to raise eyebrows either…
Well in the end, they did catch her after an anonymous tip-off. It took 10 years and $40M but they got there in the end. I’ve also just read that Yale has a a $42.3 BILLION endowment, which could actually go some way to explaining why they didn’t notice $40m missing. It’s peanuts for them. No wonder tuition is so expensive!
In addition to her 109-month sentence, Petrone was ordered to pay full restitution and forfeit $560,000 seized from her company’s bank account, plus the six cars she bought. Think she might also need to put those houses on the market too. Oh well, I’m sure it was fun while it lasted. Her lawyer, Frank Riccio, said in an email:
‘Ms. Petrone profoundly apologized to Yale University for her inexcusable actions.
She continues to accept responsibility and intends on continuing with making restitution.’
