76-year-old anti-virus mogul John McAfee was widely reported to have hanged himself inside a Spanish jail in June 2021 while awaiting US extradition on tax evasion charges. But, according to his Belizean ex-girlfriend Samantha Herrera, he faked his own death, moved to Texas and is still alive.
Here’s what Herrera says in new Netflix documentary “Running With the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee,” out this week:
“I don’t know if I should say, but two weeks ago, after his death, I got a call from Texas: ‘It’s me, John. I paid off people to pretend that I am dead, but I am not dead.”
Herrera says he told her that “there are only three persons in this world that know I’m still alive” and then asked her to run away with him. So it looks like she turned that option down and instead told the world that her dead boyfriend is still alive and hiding in Texas? Pretty rough when 1/3 of the people you trusted with your biggest secret decides to tell Netflix all about it…
When it comes to McAfee though, anything is possible. The guy was a millionaire eccentric who would always go off the grid between viral stories of drugs, women, weapons, arrests and more drugs. If anyone’s the ‘fake my own death’ type, it’s John McAfee. Lord knows he had the funds and connections to do it, so who’s to say he didn’t figure something out with the Spanish authorities and then escape to his secret hideout in Texas via helicopter?
People always suspected the ‘suicide’ story was bogus anyway, especially given McAfee’s final Tweets from his prison cell:
Getting subtle messages from U.S. officials saying, in effect: “We’re coming for you McAfee! We’re going to kill yourself”. I got a tattoo today just in case. If I suicide myself, I didn’t. I was whackd. Check my right arm.$WHACKD available only on https://t.co/HdSEYi9krq🙂 pic.twitter.com/rJ0Vi2Hpjj

I am content in here. I have friends.
The food is good. All is well.
Know that if I hang myself, a la Epstein, it will be no fault of mine.

They even found a suicide note on his body, which his wife Janice insists is fake:
Here is the alleged suicide note found in John’s pocket. This note does not sound anything like someone who has no hope and is contemplating ending their life. This note sounds like one of John’s tweets. #NotASuicideNote #JusticeForJohnMcAfee pic.twitter.com/QCODfvh8sh

The handwriting is suspect & I doubt the authenticity of the note. It reads more like someone trying to imitate John’s style of tweeting. And if this note was found in his pocket where are the markings of the note being folded into his pocket? #NotASuicideNote #JustForJohnMcAfee

As I say, anything is possible with John McAfee. If he did call up his ex-girlfriend and reveal he was hiding out in Texas, I wonder if he had the foresight to know she’d go blabbing to Netflix, and if that’s part of his plan somehow. Keep the people guessing while he figures out his next move. Or… he might have actually killed himself in his cell as the Spanish authorities say. After all, this is a guy who used to play Russian Roulette for fun. Clearly more than a little off his rocker, even if he did insist he was happy in prison.
