Well I’m not sure what to make of this really. On one hand it looks completely awesome and futuristic, on the other hand it kinda looks like 9 million people are going to be living in a giant shopping centre? Not sure the Saudis are considering (or care about) the psychological implications of living, working and existing for years or decades inside a giant metal beehive. Then again, most people around the world live in far worse and more crowded conditions than this.

Flanked by 500m high mirrored walls, officials say the megastructure will offer up to 9 million residents a temperate climate and short commutes, all powered by 100% renewable energy.

Named ‘the Line,’ Saudi officials say the project is ‘the city of the future’: a car-free metropolis that will run on 100% renewable energy and offer its residents clean air in an ever more polluted world.

It’s designed to host businesses as well as housing inside numerous vertically-stacked neighbourhoods, with residents facing a maximum commute of 20 minutes from one end of the city to the other.

I just can’t wrap my head around an 100 mile long city that is a 20 minute commute from one end to the other. Meanwhile the London Underground takes you an hour and a half to get from one side of London to the other. Still, I’m willing to wait for some reviews from the 9 million or so inhabitants that will be occupying ‘The Line’ once it’s built, before I decide whether it’s a good idea or not. Are they even allowed to say it isn’t a good idea without being imprisoned or beheaded? That might complicate things even further.
