One of the most anticipated Netflix releases in the coming months is the Marilyn Monroe biopic starring Ana de Armas. The film was originally deemed ‘too sexual’ for the platform, but it looks like they’ve solved that problem by slapping an NC-17 rating on it. Not that director Andrew Dominik gives a crap what people think of his movie, having said the following previously:
“It’s a demanding movie. If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the f*cking audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office. It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right? I want to go and see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.”
Fair enough! Here’s the first teaser trailer for ‘Blonde’:
Well, so far so good if you ask me. They’ve certainly done a brilliant job in making Ana de Armas look like Marilyn Monroe:
With Netflix’s stock tanking big time in the last year, an NC-17 movie featuring Ana de Armas as one of the most legendary sex symbols in history is probably a good marketing decision, which makes the initial reluctance to host this ‘graphic’ film on their platform all the more confusing.
In addition to ‘Blonde’, Netflix is also gearing up for the return of Black Mirror and a real life Squid Game competition show. They could probably bump up their subscription prices on the strength of those three productions alone! But hopefully not. ‘Blonde’ drops this September – can’t wait.
