You probably heard about the man who leapt into the Thames on Saturday after being tasered by police on Chelsea Bridge road in West London. Unfortunately, the man has since passed away after being pulled to safety by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and rushed to hospital.

There’s some debate over whether the police could have handled the situation better. The man was holding a screwdriver and got tasered multiple times, which apparently didn’t have the desired effect because he was able to run to the side of the bridge and jump off. Maybe an officer could have got on top of him while he was still on the ground after being tasered? I don’t know what the protocol is but it seems a bit harsh to blame the police for how this turned out. Some are saying they shouldn’t have freaked him out with taser as he was in the middle of some kind of mental health episode, but if he’d then hurt someone with the screwdriver, they’d be criticised for not acting fast enough.

In any case, a man is dead and that’s the tragic take from this whole situation. Almost every summer a couple of foolhardy people die by messing about in the Thames because of the deadly currents, not to mention you’re swimming in hundreds of years of sewage water. A guy in the middle of a mental breakdown who has just been repeatedly tasered would never stand a chance. RIP to the victim and thoughts with his friends and family.
