A town councilor has quit over accusations he is secretly Banksy – saying the claims are undermining his ability to do his job.
Councillor William Gannon, who served Pembroke Dock’s Bufferland Ward in Pembrokeshire, Wales, revealed how he was stepping down with immediate effect in a statement released on Facebook today:
‘As you may be aware an allegation has been repeatedly made that I am not who I say I am, but I am the artist Banksy.
A number of people believe that this allegation is true.
This allegation is undermining my ability to do the work of councillor and council rep properly.
I do not want this allegation to undermine the reputation of Pembroke Dock Town Council.’
Cllr Gannon was allegedly subjected to a campaign of harassment, intimidation and stalking after people became convinced he was Banksy. Not sure quitting his position as town councilor is going to help matters; in fact it’s probably gonna add more fuel to the fire? Notice he didn’t issue a denial in his Facebook statement! Is it possible that (former) Councillor William Gannon is indeed Banksy? Would it even be such a big deal if he was?
Well, either way, would be great to know how these rumours started in the first place because they just seem too ridiculous for someone to make up out of thin air. Good luck to William on his future endeavors that may or may not include plastering politically-charged stencil art around the UK.
