I think at this point everyone knows someone who has promised to get involved with the crisis in Ukraine in some way – be that housing a refugee, donating money/aid or something else – and we all know that one person who has talked a big game and then done absolutely nothing. I doubt any of them are as dumb as the woman in this story though, even if she does mean well.

34 year old Leoni Fildes was out celebrating her friend’s birthday on Saturday 5th March when everyone started talking about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and what they could do to help. After having a few too many double gins and shots of sambuca, Fildes thought the best course of action was for her to order a £4500 Uber over there so that she could help out.
Although I’m sure she would have been an amazing help over there and they would have been stoked to have a drunk white woman with no experience of crisis management over thee, her card was unfortunately declined. The first she actually remembered of if was when she woke up to a call from her card company in the morning saying that someone had committed fraudulent activity on her account. Classic night out hey?
Anyway, here’s Leoni’s account of events:
I’d gone out with one of my friends in Swinton. We came up with the conversation about the war in Ukraine.
It was a conversation about the war. My boyfriend’s in the military and we were talking about if he had to go. I said ‘if he goes, I’m going with him’.
One too many drinks later, we were trying to get a taxi home. We said ‘shall we get a taxi and go help them’.
We’d been out for about four hours so I’d had a few double pink gins, and quite a lot of shots of sambuca and a bottle of prosecco.
I think that might have tipped me over the edge.
I don’t know what I’d do if Uber had let me order it. I don’t think I’d have got in but you don’t know after a drink.
I might have piled into the taxi and realised when we got further out.
It would have been coming out of my account and I don’t know where I’d have woken up.
After we’d done that, I couldn’t get a taxi for about an hour and a half.
Sounds like a really raucous night out in Swinton doesn’t it? Absolutely wild. Must have been annoying when they were waiting around for 90 minutes for a taxi after though. The girl who cried Ukraine would be a good name for the morale of that story.
Whilst this is a kinda funny story, it really doesn’t do any favours to the people of Ukraine, who are fleeing a warzone and don’t have the luxury of making jokes about getting Ubers that cost £4500 to try and help out – they’re literally dying over there if they don’t get out. Think about that next time before you try and trivialise the situation. I hope Leoni made a donation or something.
For more of the same, check out when an Uber driver got attacked with hand sanitiser for asking a passenger to wear a face mask. Those were the days.
