I know I keep saying this and it probably should been rammed into me by now, but I still can’t believe just how enamoured this country seems to be with basic takeaway food from McDonald’s – but more and more stories keep coming out to collaborate this theory.

The latest one comes courtesy of 23 year olds Ryan Hall and Paisley Hamilton, who decided to take a 250 mile round trip in order to rekindle their love affair with the Golden Arches. The Hull duo decided to jump into Ryan’s Fiat 500 (the irony isn’t lost on me here) and drive down to the nearest open drive thru down in Peterborough.
Once there, they then had to queue for another half an hour at the restaurant before spending £20 on a on a large McNugget meal, large Big Mac meal, two Cokes, two double cheeseburgers, a regular cheeseburger, a McChicken sandwich and a Filet-O-Fish. I guess presumably they saved some of it for the ride home? I guess you’re not gonna scrimp when you have to travel seven hours for the stuff, are you?
Overall, the entire trip cost them £47 in terms of food and petrol. Here’s what Ryan said about the essential journey:
We didn’t really think it through. Our 15-minute meal ended up taking us nearly seven hours.
It was definitely a ‘F*** it’ moment which actually ended up costing me a lot of money. But I’d do it all again. It was so worth it.
We realised the closest one was in Peterborough.
But we are both are mega fans. It had been eight weeks since we last had our McNuggs, and we just thought ‘Why not?’
Lockdown has been quite boring so we decided to make it a spontaneous, fun day out. We left mine at 2pm last Saturday and didn’t get home until almost 9pm.
We took the scenic route along the coast, it was such a lovely sunny day and we were really excited.
Even the queue was a highlight. I had my car soft-top down, blasting out Rain On Me by Lady Gaga. Everyone else there was joining in with the mini rave.
I mean that does sound like it would be kind of fun I suppose as road trips are always a good time. You just normally have a better destination at the end of one than a McDonald’s and some McNuggets.
Desperate times call for desperate measures though I suppose. What a time to be alive.
