Donald Trump has reportedly suggested that the US military should bomb hurricanes in order to disrupt them before they’re able to cause major damage.

According to Axios, the US President said in a meeting with top national security and homeland security officials about the threat of hurricanes:
I got it. I got it. Why don’t we nuke them?
They start forming off the coast of Africa, as they’re moving across the Atlantic, we drop a bomb inside the eye of the hurricane and it disrupts it. Why can’t we do that?
Quoting sources who were present at the meeting, Axios report that the response from one official was “We’ll look into this.”
Another senior administration official told Axios:
His goal — to keep a catastrophic hurricane from hitting the mainland — is not bad. His objective is not bad.
A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fact sheet about tropic cyclones address the concept and points out that it would be unlikely to work and most likely cause more harm than good:
Apart from the fact that this might not even alter the storm, this approach neglects the problem that the released radioactive fallout would fairly quickly move with the tradewinds to affect land areas and cause devastating environmental problems.
Needless to say, this is not a good idea.
Wow, what an idea. Is Trump a genius for coming up with this? I mean think about it – you see a hurricane forming that is sure to wreak havoc across anything it touches, so you just drop a little nuclear bomb on it and boom, job done, no more hurricane. Not like a big bomb or anything like that, just a small one. A tiny little bomb inside the eye of a hurricane to stop it dead in its tracks. It’s got to be worth a try, right?
Let’s just hope they catch it on video if Trump actually goes ahead and tries this. What a time to be alive.
