If you hadn’t been following this case back when we first wrote about it, it involves the despicable Michelle Carter from Massachusetts (17 at the time), who sent her boyfriend Conrad Roy, 18, dozens of messages urging him to kill himself, which he eventually did by filling his car with carbon monoxide (her idea).

In fact she didn’t just “urge” him to kill himself, she pretty much demanded it, gave him pep talks and advice on how to do it effectively, and basically just mindfucked him into it.

Here’s the sort of text exchanges they were having:

The little twat even begged for sympathy online after Roy had topped himself:

Can you believe that shit?

The case set a legal precedent in that Michelle, now 22, was found legally guilty of Roy’s death (manslaughter) and sentenced to 15 months, but she had remained free all this time while pursuing her appeal.

Well, that appeal has just been unanimously squashed by the Supreme Judicial Court who have upheld the decision that Michelle Carter’s actions caused Conrad Roy III to die nearly five years ago.

The judge summed up:

After she convinced him to get back into the carbon monoxide filled truck, she did absolutely nothing to help him: she did not call for help or tell him to get out of the truck as she listened to him choke and die.

Michelle’s lawyers are disappointed and reckon that her words alone don’t make her guilty:

Today’s decision stretches the law to assign blame for a tragedy that was not a crime. It has very troubling implications, for free speech, due process, and the exercise of prosecutorial discretion, that should concern us all.

Appreciate that they’ve gone for the “free speech” approach there, but the court straight up rejected it by arguing that Michelle preyed upon Roy’s “well-known weaknesses, fears, anxieties and promises” and overcame the “mentally ill, vulnerable young man’s will to live.”

We are therefore not punishing words alone, as the defendant claims, but reckless or wanton words causing death.

Terrifying to think there are people out there who would accept the same situation and lap up the attention on social media if they knew they’d get away with it. At least with this court doing its job, there’s one less of them to worry about.
