The news about Brexit is never-ending and most of the time it seems like it’s awful news that only makes the situation worse, but today we’re finally hearing some good news from the EU as they’ve announced that UK citizens will not require a £6-7 visa waiver when they’re travelling through EU countries following Brexit, even in the dreaded no deal scenario.

The new regulation means that British citizens will be allowed to travel through the EU for up to 90 days and it’s been approved by the European Parliament. It’s all good baby, but of course there had to be some small problem attached to it and this time it revolves around Gibraltar, which the EU is calling a colony and not a part of the UK.

As such, they’re arguing that citizens of Gibraltar will require a visa when they enter Spain which obviously the UK aren’t happy about. An anonymous UK government spokesperson explained the issue:

The EU’s provisions for visa-free travel into and out of the Schengen area cover Gibraltar, and mean that in any scenario, British nationals from Gibraltar will be able to travel for short stays in and out of Spain and other countries in the Schengen area.

Gibraltar is not a colony and it is completely inappropriate to describe in this way.

Gibraltar is a full part of the UK family and has a mature and modern constitutional relationship with the UK.

This will not change due to our exit from the EU. All parties should respect the people of Gibraltar’s democratic wish to be British.

There’s always something isn’t there? Anyway hopefully this won’t prove too much of a sticking point and we should probably be happy that the EU have finally given us some concessions over these points. Maybe Boris et al were right and they will blink and give us everything we want before March 29th. Watch this space.
