If you had told me at the back end of 2018 that the first huge controversy of 2019 would revolve around a Greggs vegan sausage roll then I probably would have told you that you were an idiot, but I guess that goes to show how little I really know about anything.

Everywhere you go people are talking about it with the people that are completely and utterly outraged by it seemingly vastly outnumbering the usual vegan militants who can’t stop imposing their opinions on everyone. I’m fairly easy to just let people do whatever they want with it – it’s a sausage roll for fuck’s sake – but it seems as though it’s a hell of a lot more popular than anyone ever suspected as well.
A number of branches of Greggs have already been reporting about how they’ve sold out of their allocation every day and a couple of people have now taken this to the next extreme by offering the vegan sausage roll up for sale on eBay. There are a couple of listings out there at the time of writing, starting the bidding at £7.00 and £8.00 respectively, with people apparently already putting money in for them.
Maybe this is the only way to get your hands on one of them if you’re not lucky to live in an area with a low population of vegans. There are rumours going around that someone bought one now for £12.50 but I’m not sure if that’s true without actually seeing it in the listing. Either way, an 800% profit isn’t bad is it? Might be a nice sideline of business if there are a few available in your town.
If you’re coming from the other side of the equation and thinking about buying one, then it’s probably better to go for the one that’s guaranteed from a Greggs employee as you know then that it’s going to be the real thing. Wouldn’t surprise me if a counterfeit market for the dumb things emerged given the hype that’s been surrounding them.
