Doner kebabs might be completely and utterly rank and disgusting when you think about them, but most people who aren’t vegan/vegetarian would probably agree that there’s literally nothing better to end your night out then a greasy kebab and some chips. It’s practically a British tradition.

Unfortunately, this may be a tradition that’s in danger of disappearing, as new EU legislation is looking at banning phosphates. Phosphates are a key ingredient to doner meat and arguably serve to give them their unique taste and so without them, the legendary takeaway could be in danger of dying forever.
Here’s what Kenan Koyuncu of the German Association of Doner Kebab Producers had to say about it:
If the European Parliament gets its way, this would be the death sentence for the entire doner kebab industry in the European Union.
This thought was echoed by Renate Sommer, a member of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s who said:
A ban of the phosphate addition would be the end of doner production and would lead to the loss of thousands of jobs.
Damn, that’s some pretty serious talk right there isn’t it? The Health Commission wants to ban phosphates because they’ve been linked to heart disease, which sounds perfectly plausible considering people that eat kebabs regularly tend to be kinda fat.
Whether or not this actually happens is anyone’s guess though – in any case The Health Commission is waiting until the results of a study due next year into phosphates before they make their decision. It is a very real possibility though, that’s for sure.
However, if/when Brexit is confirmed then the UK won’t be a member of the EU, so we won’t even necessarily have to conform to this law anyway and will be able to keep our doner kebabs. Finally, something good to come from that situation.
