A short movie named ‘The Disappearance of Willie Bingham’ by filmmaker Matt Richards presents a sinister portrayal of the death penalty and justice system in Australia.

It tells the story of a child murderer who is the first inmate to undergo a gruesome punishment under the State’s revised stance on capital crime. As is outlined, Bingham was made an example of this new procedure whereby criminals have their death penalty revoked and instead have their limbs removed. The amputations are decided by the deceased victim’s family members.

Grim. It’s the sort of film that leaves an unsettling feeling in the pit of your stomach and although it seems extreme, in the world we live in you can imagine this punishment becoming a reality in the not-too-distant future.

To Richards, the short story spoke directly to what might happen in the very near future if people were to abandon compassion and follow a black and white sense of right and wrong. And this is it.
