In similar scenes to when Hannibal Lecter first met Clarice in ‘Silence of the Lambs’, Rebecca Harrison met with 17-year-old murderer known only as ‘Robert’ as part of her research for a BBC Horizon documentary called ‘What Makes A Psychopath?’ which airs tonight on BBC2 at 9pm.

Robert was put in prison at the age of 17 and left a prison guard permanently brain damaged during a failed attempt to escape. When Harrison met with him, she said he enjoyed telling her:
The back of your neck is the weakest spot on your body, so I hit him there.
Harrison said:
Sat just a few feet from this man I probably should have felt more frightened of him than I initially did.
But his charming mannerisms sucked me in.
Charisma is often a trait associated with psychopaths. Robert then claimed he could read anybody based on their clothes, and their posture. Here’s what he said about Harrison:
You’re on edge a little bit … I’m not a threat…You’ve got dark pants on; you’ve got dark boots on.
Your boots alone are laced all the way tight and your pants are darker of a colour, so you started today with a firm, determined goal.
Your shirt is… more at ease. It’s not a hard colour, it’s see how the day takes me, I’m going to do this but we’re just going to see how it goes.
Harrison added that she didn’t breathe throughout the entire ordeal and that when she asked Robert if he thought he was a psychopath, he replied:
Narcissistic maybe. Not a psychopath.
Of course, another trait of psychopaths is that they’re excellent liars, so we can’t be sure if he’s telling the truth there.
As part of the documentary, Harrison also interviews other criminals at the huge Indiana State Prison for the film to try and answer the question of what makes a psychopath.
