An Indian man who bought the world’s most expensive shirt made entirely of gold has been battered to death, according to police.

Datta Phuge became semi-famous in 2013 when he bought a shirt made with more than 3kg of gold and worth $250,000 (£186,940). As a money lender based in western Pune, he was known as “the gold man”.

Police said up to 12 people assaulted Mr Phuge on Thursday night after inviting him and his 22-year-old son to celebrate a birthday at an open ground, where they were waiting with stones and a ‘sharp weapon’.
Police reckon it was a dispute over money. They said the son had witnessed the murder and had been spared by the killers.
Phuge had told the BBC in 2013:
Some people ask me why I’m wearing so much gold but it was my dream. People have different aspirations. Some elite people want to own an Audi or Mercedes, and have big cars. I chose gold.

RIP to a true legend – yet another in a long line of legends we’ve lost in 2016. Gold Man owned the world’s most expensive gold shirt and no one can take that away from him even in death. Really shitty way to go being beaten to death like that but I guess you always run the risk of people wanting to kick the shit out of you when you’re known as ‘Gold Man’.
Bury him in his $250,000 gold shirt I say. No doubt he’ll have a pretty sweet coffin too. RIP.
