Here’s the latest item that I can’t imagine anyone on Earth would actually want to buy, let alone use: KFC flavoured nail polish.

Although I admit that KFC does have a distinct legendary awesome flavour, I can’t imagine that I would want to paint this onto my nails so I could suck on them all day to keep the flavour in my mouth. I also can’t imagine that I’d want to lick it off my partner’s hands, in fact I think if we were getting it on that would really turn me off if she tasted like fried chicken. Surely it can’t actually be healthy/good for you in any way either?
Nevertheless, my opinions aside it seems like KFC actually did make this nail polish, although it is mainly being used in an ad campaign devised by Ogilvy & Mather to target their Hong Kong customer base and increase brand awareness. I suppose the idea of KFC nail polish is especially big over there or something? There are two separate flavours that have been devised with help from the food experts at McCormick: Original Recipe and Hot And Spicy and people are being asked to vote on which one goes into mass production over there. You couldn’t make this up.
Right. The KFC press release goes like this:
In line with its spirit of innovation, KFC Hong Kong unveils their new ‘Finger Lickin’ Good Edible Nail Polish’ range, keeping the brand literally at their customers’ fingertips while savoring their delicious signature chicken.
This limited edition edible nail polish was created as a tribute to the world famous “It’s Finger Lickin’ Good” slogan.
KFC’s signature flavors — Original Recipe and Hot & Spicy — have been carefully formulated from natural ingredients into edible nail polish and packaged in a stylish glass bottle and minimal box with over gloss details to appeal to young consumers’ love of food and fashion. Simply apply and dry like regular nail polish and then lick — again and again and again to taste why the world’s favourite chicken is Finger Lickin’ Good.
Here’s a really weird video of a guy and girl dancing to some music and licking the nail polish off their fingers:
And Ogilvy and Mather had the following to say about it:
The recipe for our edible nail polish is unique and was specifically designed to hold the flavor, but to also dry with a glossy coat similar to normal nail polish.
This campaign is designed to be intriguing and fun to increase excitement around the KFC brand in Hong Kong.
Well that’s pretty much answered none of our questions about it, but I suppose at least people are talking about it. I’m just utterly confused by the whole concept – KFC should just go back to producing weird food like the Double Down King and not branching out into weird stuff like nail polish. It’s too messed up.
