In protest of another decision to bomb defenceless countries in the Middle East – decisions which have only seemed to exasperate the problem over there –  war veterans from campaigns in the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya are uniting to march on Downing Street and throw their medals on the ground in front of the Prime Minister’s door. Fair play.

It’s the brainchild of an organisation called Veterans For Peace, who believe that war is not the answer to the problems of the 21st century. Consisting of men and women who have fought in every campaign since World War II, they’re probably more qualified than most on the subject too.

Daniel Lenham who served in the RAF from 2002 to 2014 said

In protest at the decision to bomb Syria, we will hand back medals given to us for participating in previous attacks on the Middle East.

These invasions, occupations and attacks have caused great destruction, killed hundreds of thousands of people and have led to the destruction of societies.

Bombing is never a solution it is time to stop.

Well said, and I dare say it echoes the sentiments of the majority of the country. Unfortunately, I doubt that even the fact that these guys no longer want their medals and are willing to discard them in a massively symbolic gesture because of this decision is enough to stop David Cameron from bombing the shit out of Syria.

If you want to show your support though, head down to Downing Street later today. They’re meeting at Nelson’s column at 1pm and then marching over there. Hopefully they’ll have more luck than when these jokers tried to deliver a pig to David Cameron on the back of Piggate.
