Mosa’ab Elshamy was a young man studying pharmacy when the Egyptians rose up against Hosni Mubarak in 2011. Photography was a hobby which suddenly switched to become his full-time passion. With disorder and violence all around him he turned the lens on his people. All of a sudden he was at the centre of a political and social nightmare and he made it his aim to capture and frame the dissent and anguish he witnessed. At just 23-years-old his friends were dying and his relatives being arrested.

After his fledgling experiences as a photojournalist in his home country, Elshamy went on to capture political instability in other countries including Sudan and Palestine.

The pictures that follow are intimate and disturbing images of war and uprising. Certainly not for the fainthearted. He charts bravery and passion, injury and sorrow.
