RIP H.R. Giger: Surreal Goth Mastermind Dead At 74

Some sad news from the world of gothic sci-fi today. Renowned artist, set designer and all around creepy dude, H.R. Gieger died after suffering injuries from a fall. He was only 74 and if you asked me passed away in a less than fitting manner, but left quite the legacy. He was most famous for his work on the set of Alien, but gained a cult following among goths and dystopian sci-fi enthusiasts for his dark, surreal and erotic imagery.

Since the 90s he pretty much laid low splitting his time between a castle in the Swiss alps and a house in Zurich, which is supposedly painted all black inside. Although he hasn’t been as active in the past 20 years, he left one hell of an impact in the art world. He inspired a new aesthetic for everything from high heels to guitars to bar concepts and also drew up some awesome metal album covers. Basically if you like skulls and cyborgs you can thank Giger. Definitely someone who made no apologies for his taste and probably encouraged countless others to pursue their seemingly unconventional and bizarre interests.
