Astronaut Reddit AMA - NASA Shrimp

Space food is well renowned for being tasteless and dry. I’m assuming no one orbiting the earth really complains though, they don’t exactly have space for a deep fat frier and a fondue set (imagine a fondue in zero gravity). But the favourite NASA dish seems to be shrimp. Buzz Aldrin said:

[The food] was mostly freeze-dried so we had to add water to the container and let it set… We had very small shrimp that had a little bit of cocktail sauce, and when exposed to water, were very very tasty.

A spaceman’s love of shrimp was also confirmed by Hoffman decades later:

The reason is that your sense of smell and taste are reduced in weightlessness, probably because of the fluid shift to the upper body, which fills up your head and makes you feel a bit like you have sinus congestion… The shrimp in the cocktail were not great, but the sauce had a lot of spicy horseradish, and it really opened your head up. I had a shrimp cocktail before every dinner!
