The world is full of freaks and nutjobs, and that’s why I love it. If you think of the weirdest/dumbest idea you can, you can pretty much assume someone has already had that idea, made it a reality and written a book about it.
This post is dedicated to the insanity of restauranteurs. In this day and age when people are trying to save a bob or two, eating out has slipped down the ladder of importance and an eatery’s proprietor has to get creative and give people a reason to come back.
Just FYI, the picture in the header image up top is from a restaurant in Bangkok (of course) called Cabbage and Condoms and it promotes safe sex, apparently. So here’s a few mad men that have gone that extra mile and made some themed restaurants worthy of parting with your cash.
6. Kayabukiya Tavern, Japan
This Japanese wonder features a couple of monkey waiters. Yeah, not guys in suits dressed as monkeys, but actual real life monkeys. This traditional sake house in the city of Utsunomiya, just North of Tokyo employs a pair of uniformed Japanese macaques called Yat-chan and Fuku-chan. The owner, Kaoru Otsuka, 68, says the monkeys are better than some of the humans he’s employed. And how do you tip a monkey waiter? Soy beans apparently.
Here’s a CNN news report with a really patronising narrator.

It kind of seems like animal abuse a little bit, but apparently Japanese regulators only allow them to work for a couple of hours a day and have checked the place to make sure it’s safe and sound for them. I guess if they’re getting soy beans they must be happy in their work, right?
