2) Ramil Sahib Oglu Safarov
Safarov is an officer of the Azerbaijani Army who was convicted of the 2004 murder of Armenian Army Lieutenant Gurgen Margaryan. During a NATO partnership for peace training seminar in Budapest (yeah, “peace”), Safarov sneaked into Margaryan’s dormitory room at 5:00am, and axed him to death with repeated blows, almost decapitating him in the process.
Margaryan’s terrified room-mate stared on in horror and screamed at him to stop. Safarov put him at ease by saying he had no problem with him so he would be safe. He then continued with his butchery.
Rightly he was condemned to life imprisonment in a Hungarian prison. This is where the story gets really weird: he was extradited on August 31, 2012 back to Azerbaijan, where he was greeted as a hero!? Despite promises made by the Azerbaijani President, Safarov was pardoned and treated like a rock star. He was promoted to the rank of major and given an apartment and over eight years of back pay.
Unsurprisingly it caused an international incident between the two countries.
Here’s a couple of chilling lines from his interview with the police before his initial incarceration: “I regret that I hadn’t killed any Armenian before this… My calling is to kill all the Armenians”.
