A 50-year-old man has been fined $600 for doing a Jimmy ‘Superfly’ Snuka style splash off his boat and onto an orca in New Zealand.
Obviously a completely stupid thing to do, made worse by the fact the orca was swimming with a calf at the time. Here’s the footage:
NEW: 50-year-old man fined $600 for bodyslamming a Killer Whale off the coast of New Zealand.
The orca was swimming with a calf when the man decided to jump off the boat.
“I touched it!” the man said.
According to the Department of Conservation, the man could have been… pic.twitter.com/8I4Pj9IRL7

Now even a fat 50-year-old man from New Zealand is probably too small to hurt a killer whale (even when he’s frog splashing off a boat), and it’s possible the orca even enjoyed this display from the hairless ape. The issue is more to do with how much danger the man put himself in!
Apparently orcas don’t tend to hurt humans, but he’s still very lucky the creature didn’t turn defensive because he would 100% be dead right now. Which would have made the video go even more viral, so not necessarily a bad thing, depending on how you look at it.
The Department of Conservation fined the man $600, and issued the following statement:
“Orca are immensely powerful animals, and this really could have ended horribly, with either the startled whale being injured, or the man responsible being harmed by the aggravated animal.”
Indeed. Just the $600 fine though? Probably worth it to be able to say you splashed a killer whale and went viral for it. Why not $6,000? At least that might serve as a deterrent to idiots like him in the future, since the threat of being obliterated by a killer whale clearly is not enough.
