DERWEZE (TURKMENISTAN)
Located in the fields of Derweze is the ‘Door To Hell’. The reason it’s called that? Well, a group of scientists believed it to be a good oil site, so began to dig up the area. However, gas was found and they were happy nonetheless to find something they could sell. Unfortunately, the land gave way, creating a large crater, and they were unable to dig anymore. Methane gas was shooting out of the crater at high speeds, affecting the surrounding villages. In order to stop the gas infecting further, they decided the burn it, expecting it to go out in a matter of days.
It is still burning to this day, half a century later.
