The fate of Flight 19 marks the birth of the Bermuda Triangle myth. Flight 19 consisted of five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers, all of which disappeared without a trace over the now infamous Bermuda Triangle region.
No remains were ever found, but radio transmissions point to navigational errors sending the planes off course where they ran out of fuel and ditched in the Atlantic. Still, it’s a bit weird that all five bought it in one fell swoop. You’d thing there might have been at least one straggler that managed to make it through.
