3) Pig Corpses – China – March 2014
This one’s a bit more confusing. 157 dead pigs have been pulled out of the Gan river in Nanchang this week. The locals use the water for drinking so floating, bloating pig bodies aren’t necessarily what you want to find in it.
This follows hot on the heels of a massive haul of 16,000 carcasses which were discovered in Shanghai’s main waterway last year. Where are all the pigs coming from? Their ear tags show they came from Zhangshu which is about 100 km up the river, but no one is owning up to it.
The pig body finds aren’t that mysterious, it’s likely to be farmers who can’t afford/can’t be bothered to dispose of carcasses properly just bunging them in the river. Another reason for the river pigs is that the government is currently cracking down on selling meat from animals that died of disease. Three men were sentenced to life in prison in Jiaxing last November for procuring dead pigs to sell their meat.
