2) Trout Death – Pennsylvania – March 2014
An estimated 52,000 fingerling trout have died at a trout farm near Newville, Pennsylvania. Trout farmer Kasianowitz had a similar event happen a few months back too. He reported it to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) when it first happened but didn’t bother this time as the organisation had no idea what had gone on the last time so he thought it was pointless to tell them again.
Kasianowitz is convinced it’s manure run off from local farms infiltrating his water and clearing out the fish’s oxygen, but the DEP says that local farmers are using manure in the official standard way. He estimates his losses to be around $100,000 and his insurance won’t cover it (what a surprise).
So this event seems to have been a human created problem in a human created farm.
