4. Ne Win
Many people are superstitious, from sportspeople to Stevie Wonder. Superstition in itself is not too weird. Maybe when it starts changing big things in your life, then it becomes a bit of a problem. Just look at the ex-Prime Minister of Burma Ne Win. He regularly crossed bridges backwards as he thought this would ward off evil spirits.
His political advisors were mainly astrologers and numerologists. They warned him that his regime was leaning too far to the left. As his regime was communist, this was bad. To counter this, the next day he told all his citizens that they are driving on the wrong side of the road, so everyone had to start driving on the right side. This was a bit of a problem as all the motorways and cars were built for left hand drive.
He also implemented 45 and a 90 kyat note, as 9 was his lucky number. 90 is quite a significant number for old Ne Win, because that’s the grand old age he died at. He attributed his long life for bathing in dolphin blood. That’s right, those chilled things you see at Sea World. He had them killed to fill his bubble bath.
