The Great Wall Of China has been penetrated by Genghis Khan, the Manchus, and now, a couple of construction workers named Zheng and Wang who wanted to create a shortcut to work, reports The Independent.

Authorities in China have now arrested the two men for smashing a path through the ancient wall, a cultural icon and a United Nations protected heritage site. A government report states the two men wanted to shorten their daily commute to some construction work they were doing in nearby towns.

Chances are Zheng and Wang won’t be free any time soon and could even spend the rest of their lives in some windowless cell for destroying a national landmark in a country where you definitely don’t want to do that. There’s just no way a guy like President Xi is going to let that slide.

Even still, you have to sympathise with Zheng and Wang here. Everyone knows how awful the morning commute is as you scurry through the city along with thousands of others in the daily rat race to earn your paycheque. We’re supposed to wake up and go through that every morning and evening until we drop dead. If you can shave just a little bit of time off that soul-crushing process, then why not? Even if it involves smashing your way through the Great Wall of China and risking your freedom in the process.

Well anyway, at least they don’t have to show up to work anymore. Maybe Xi could just get them to rebuild the section of the Wall they destroyed and call it even? Yeah, unlikely.
