I think that everyone knows that there are a hell of a lot of fake accounts on social media that seem to pop up backing weird political decisions or condemning people arguing about the prices of trains or whatever, but I doubt anyone thought that Amber Heard and Johnny Depp would both be making fake accounts to try and gain clout during their trial.

Sadly though, this seems like exactly what is happening out there with 11% of Twitter accounts discussing the case being found to not actually belong to real people. The majority of these seem to be backing Amber Heard, but I think it’s fair to say that Johnny Depp has his fake supporters as well.
Technology company Cyabra discoverers this data and their CEO Dan Brahmy had the following to say about it:

Whenever there’s a lot of people involved, there’s always going to be some level of additional, inauthentic conversation going on around a topic usually…about drawing financial interest, or some sort of status or political interest.
The average of inauthenticity usually ranges between 3 to 5 percent. One fake pro-Depp Twitter account received almost 20,000 shares with a single post.
It was previously pretty unlikely that we thought we’d be having a conversation about misinformation when it comes to a Johnny Depp topic. Elections, yes. Wars, yes.
But actually, now, when it comes to celebrity topics…we’re finding ourselves we’re looking at topics, more and more, covering everyday celebrity topics.
We can now pretty confidently say that there isn’t a topic in the news at the moment…or any topic that’s being discussed on social media that isn’t being touched by the challenge and the issue of disinformation and fake profiles propagating and having an impact on the conversation in a negative way.
Well, isn’t that just great, although I suppose we shouldn’t really be that surprised that everything online is fake and employed to drive and influence over decisions. Isn’t that why Elon Musk has bought Twitter right, to try and sort that out? Sure he’ll really be looking into getting that turned around as a priority.
Anyway, I’m kinda surprised that the fake profiles are pro-Heard as pretty much everyone I’ve seen talking about it online seems to be very pro-Depp. Having said that, maybe that’s why she needs to push these fake profiles as no real people are backing her?
Or maybe someone else at the top is pushing all these fraudulent accounts for some other agenda? Or maybe Cyabra themselves have some kind of crazy endgame? Who the hell knows anymore? It’s getting to that point.
For more of the same, here’s Amber Heard’s lawyer objecting to a question he asked himself. What a doofus.
