6) Lamplighter
You take it for granted that the lights on your road come on every evening automatically (except for that one half way down that blinks off and on all night that the council can’t be arsed to fix) but it wasn’t always the case.
Gas lamps refused to turn themselves on by themselves, so a fella had to go round each evening and ignite them. When electricity and all of its wonders became mainstream the lamplighter’s task was over.
