10) Lector Who Entertained Factory Workers

Lectors were employed by people who worked in factories to read to them whilst they worked. Sometimes Unions would pay the costs and the lectors would read out left-wing publications. It’s a pretty cool idea isn’t it? If you’ve got a boring job that would make all the difference. I guess the radio fills that role nowadays.

The practice of reading to workers is supposed to have started off in Cuba where it’s still common to this day.

So which of the above would you have plumped for? Definitely not the knocker up, I couldn’t get up any earlier than I already do. I think I might have gone for the lector job, sitting down and reading all day sounds fine to me.
