As Steve Irwin found out the hard way, a stingray certainly can be deadly. The manta ray, on the other hand, is a much gentler relative. It has no vicious teeth, poison or electrical weapons. They’ll certainly give you a shock if they come at you from the depths, but you’re actually quite safe.
At up to 25 feet across you’re a stronger man than I if you don’t pack your pants. Of all the shark and ray family the manta rays have the largest brain in comparison to body size; they’re smart enough to beat you at chess, but they only filter feed so you won’t lose an arm.
Well, folks, I hope that has put you at ease a touch. Nature always looks weird but it won’t always kill you. And remember: red next to black will make you a snack; red next to yellow… oh… I’ve forgotten it already. Just don’t touch snakes, OK?
