5) The Plantaris Muscle
The plantaris muscle is used by many animals to grip objects with their feet. The muscle is still resident in our tootsies but, as you may have noticed, we can’t pick stuff up with our feet anymore because they’re the wrong shape. The muscle is so small and useless that rookie students often mistake it for a nerve, earning it the nickname of the “freshman nerve”.
The plantaris muscle is actually removed by doctors if they need tissue to reconstruct other parts of the body that have been injured. Nowadays 9% of humanity are born without it.
